25 Anniversary Celebrations and Events of 1997

The British-Asian Uganda Trust was inspired by Mr Manubhai Madhvani and was set up to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the arrival of British-Asians from Uganda in 1972. The purpose of the Trust was:

  • To mark and celebrate the 25th anniversary of the arrival of the British Asians in the UK and to thank the British people and all the voluntary organisations for all their humanitarian efforts in responding to the evacuee crisis in 1972.
  • To thank the President of Uganda, His Excellency The Honourable Yoweri Museveni, and the Ugandan nation for the historic decision to rectify the wrong-doings and the injustice of Idi Amin and invite the Asians back to Uganda to contribute in the rebuilding of the country and the economy.
  • To honour those statesman and national leaders who were instrumental in accepting responsibility for the British Asians expelled from Uganda by Idi Amin. To provide a historical record of the events leading up to the evacuee crisis and its aftermath.
  • To raise funds for charities in the United Kingdom and Uganda.
